When digital systems fail: The hidden risks of our digital world
Flagship report launching 5 May 2026
A “digital pandemic” may be more likely than it seems. New report explores the fragility of our interconnected world — and what we can do about it.
What if mobile phones and the internet stopped working, payments failed, hospitals lost patient data, and emergency alerts never arrived? What may sound like science fiction could become a reality. Modern society runs on critical digital infrastructure, from electricity, finance, and transport to healthcare, communication, and government services. These deeply connected systems are more fragile than they appear, and their risks are largely overlooked.
About the report
When digital systems fail: The hidden risks of our digital world , published by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR), and Sciences Po, explores physical risks on Earth, under the sea, and in space. Drawing on real-world examples and the work of experts from 12 countries, the report maps the fragility of our interconnected digital world and offers a roadmap for collective preparedness.
Aligning with the theme of World Telecommunication and Information Society Day (WTISD) 2026, the report is a timely reminder of what is at stake when the digital lifelines we depend on fail.
